Salut, I’m Gareth!

I translate documents, and create tools to speed up the process.

My Approach

Sense-for-sense translation

I have been trained to translate documents using a paradigm formally referred to as ‘sense-for-sense’ translation. This is a methodology wherein one’s goal is to translate the underlying meaning of a text rather than translating it word-for-word. The purpose of this is to make it easier for those reading translations of a given text to understand these works in a manner closely approximating how native speakers interpret the original untranslated versions.

Hardware-based tools

I develop and employ custom equipment to assist me with my work. These tools provide an array of unique benefits, ranging from significantly faster typing speeds, stenography functionality, and CAT-software integration, to OS-agnostic task automation and improved ergonomics.

Multidisciplinary Training

With education from multiple universities and experience within disciplines ranging from pharmacology to hardware design, I am well-equipped to translate documents of a technical or academic nature. This multidisciplinary training makes working with such texts more efficient, while also ensuring more accurate final results.

FAQ

  • Would you like assistance translating documents or designing tools to help make the process easier? Would you like to discuss a long-term working relationship or long-term project? Please feel free to reach out!

  • For transcribing subtitles in only one language, my rate is $0.02 per word.

However, for the creation of multilingual subtitles, my rate is $0.06 per word.

  • For long-term projects, pricing is based on both the scope of the project and the desired timeline.

However, for the translation of individual documents into English, my rate is $0.05 per word.

  • In order to create a high quality and well-formatted document or document template using tools like LaTeX or R Markdown, my rate is $25 per page.

  • For hardware design projects, pricing is based on both the complexity of the project and the desired timeline.

Simpler dual-sided circuit boards with less sophisticated functionality such as stenotype machines or braille input devices can be completed in less than one year. Such projects cost $2000-$5000 depending upon the design constraints and complexity of the project.

More sophisticated devices such as handheld video game consoles and braille output devices require a minimum of one year to produce, with prices and timelines being negotiated on a project-by-project basis.
